Questions, Complaints, issues

Update: A new build has been released with some fixes (along with availability of the standard version). Bug reports should now be made in this thread.

DestkopX 4.0 Pro Beta 1 has been released on Impulse.

Zubaz is relaxing on his private island today (he will tell you he's sick, don't believe him!), so here is a thread to post issues.

There is no official changelog yet, but here are a few changes:

  • Plugins and data can now be found in "%ProgramData%\Stardock\DesktopX\SDPlugins". If you have custom plugins installed, you will have to manually copy them from the DesktopX folder in Program Files for your objects to work.
  • Themes, objects & gadgets are now in Public Documents\Stardock\DesktopX
  • DesktopX right-click menu to create new objects

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give your system information including your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), Service Pack version and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

I must ask what the % means.

edit....nevermind.

Thanks for this post Littleboy; I've been trying to find where the DX folder is, never would have thought to look in Public (?!). I have the same issues already mentioned.

Silica weather is still included in widgets
Accept Drag and Drop still not working after export
Aside from the switch up in folder locations and the r-click on desktop to create new object, I'm not seeing anything new.

Windows Vista Ultimate, Service Pack 2,  32-bit

The two % means it's a special folder environment variable (there is a list here). If you copy & paste it in the folder path in explorer, it will expand to the ProgramData folder on your computer (usually it's C:\ProgramData).

It's especially useful if you need to point people to their Application Data folder (it has their username in the path, so you cannot give them a full path directly): %AppData% and %LocalAppData% will expand to their roaming application data folder and local application folder when pasted in explorer (or cmd.exe).

edit: now everybody knows

Thanks, Dude!  As before, choosing Toggle Object Palette when right clicking the DX icon in the systray does nada.

Works for me. Are you on Win 7?

Well, it's only the first beta so there is plenty of time to fix broken things before the final version.

I understand that but...If you remember - our friend Zubaz has asked us a question: What would you like to see in DesktopX 4.x? We've answered on a 8 pages. Where the results? Did you see at least one in a new version? I didn't!

So I've not told about broken things. I've tried to say that nothing from the list of known DX 3.5 issues has not corrected. As well as nothing of our desires has not added into DX 4.0...

I don't know how Stardock's developers works on their software. However I'm sure that all of useful functions which has already worked in the previous version should be transferred to a new version without any changes. Instead some of them has been lost or stopped working correctly.

Besides I'm sure that within 1,5 years they had a great possibility to make not only cosmetic changes in the DesktopX but a fundamental too. I don't need the DX item in the right click context menu and one more DX folder in the Program Data (which is not necessary in Win-7 because DX 3.5 is working on this system without any problems!).

I'm playing with WMI a lot of time because this area is very interesting for me. And I must say that the access to system folders and data in Windows-7 is nearly the same like in WIndows XP. You only need switch UAC to the low security level or even turn it off.

Just let's say "Vista Goodbye" and we will be happy.

Rightclick on the desktop crashes explorer 3 of 4 times for me with DesktopX builder started... An absolute 'nogo'.

As far as I can tell, they're all listed together now, objects, widgets, and gadgets. I kinda like that--not having to switch between two lists--but there should be something to denote which is which.

wrigleys: apparently it's only the Pro version at this time. The standard version beta will probably be released early next week (hopefully along with a changelog  ) .

Well, mine seems to be selective. For example, I have not moved my objects, widgets, and themes to the new directory, yet Tinted DX is in the DX directory, and the objects directory.

Has Stardock included these in the program? I think not. Would be cool, tho.
